The Silver Purge (845 YK, Zarantyr)
In the year 845 YK, seven time travelers gathered at the Happy Hippogriff tavern in the town of Arcanix, located near the shore of Lake Galifar and the great forest known as the Eldeen Reaches. They were each sent back in time by Dr. Morris, a druid artificer from the distant future and the caretaker of the Delorean Tree whose fruit has the power to send the eater hurtling through time and space. Recognizing one another by their aura of temporal displacement, they knew that they were Chrononauts bound together for a common purpose – to save the world from a dark future.
They were Teromil the half-elf monk, Vaelen the elf paladin, Rolf the dwarf bard, Mouly the human diviner, Xarvis the warforged barbarian druid, and Mist the tiefling gunsmith artificer. The last to join them was Ivel, a halfling warlock of the Great Old One. Ivel had a strange futuristic disc with a message from Dr. Morris. The message was a hologram, but it was damaged and scrambled. The fragments that had survived said the following:
“The Eye o’….. Storm”
“…….Beware……..”
“…..Chrononauts, you are our only hope……”
Along with the message, the Chrononauts received flashes and visions from the future. They saw a barren continent ravaged by war between armies of mechanical soldiers and alien invaders. The few survivors of humanity struggled the stay alive, and they could not hold out forever.
By chance and through investigation, Rolf and Teromil also discovered a hidden message from Dr. Morris.
“….Beware the Eye…..”
“….Beware the Storm…..”
Now the Chrononauts debated their course of action. What could they do to save the world from this dark future?
First, they needed more information. What caused this dark future to come about? They were reminded that two former chrononauts remained in this time period, and each of them had a fruit of the Delorean Tree.
Blackfire the dragonborn sorcerer, who was once called Targaryen, had planted his fruit inside the garden of a mighty fortress keep and had used it to see into the past and the future. Muthak the goliath fighter had disappeared with his fruit, but through a vision of the past the party learned that he had planted his fruit in the bottom of Lake Galifar.
The chrononauts chose to seek out Muthak in Lake Galifar. But when they approached the shore of the lake, a dark storm was brewing in the sky. Ivel shouted in excitement.
“It’s the eye of the storm!”
A dangerous mist began to surround the lake. The heroes sensed that untold dangers lurked in the mist, so they chose to circle around it by entering the Eldeen Reaches. The woods were filled by a thick fog and the floor seemed to be covered by thorny brambles that pierced one’s feet like spikes. Neither the fog nor the brambles affected Xarvis who was a druid. So Xarvis transformed into the shape of a great bear and carried his friends upon his back. Beside them, Vaelen strode forth upon a magically summoned steed whose fey hooves were also unaffected by the fog and brambles.
As the heroes strode through the woods, they were waylaid by guardians of the forest. Strange woodland beings whose bodies were covered with wood emerged from the trees. These wood woads seemed to step from one tree to the next as if through portals in space. As the chrononauts defended themselves, they heard a great rumbling in the distance and saw the tops of tree falling away. An enormous shambling mound was carving a path through the forest in their direction. It was draining the nearby plants of their life energy and growing ever bigger until finally it split into two shambling mounds. One followed the river that flowed toward the lake. The other crossed the river and shambled toward the Chrononauts, who sense that these monsters were a threat to themselves and Muthak.
With sword and spell, the Chrononauts defeated the monsters, but one of the shambling mounds had escaped. They followed it to the lake and saw that it had entered the water. Where the shambling mound stepped, the lake parted and opened a passage to the center of the lake. There in a clearing covered with underwater vegetation stood Muthak, clad in a mantle of moss and tending to a small plant in a ceramic pot. It was a scion of the Delorean Tree that was grown in a Superior Pot of Awakening.
The shambling mound lumbered to the center of the lake where it found what it was looking for. There was Muthak in a clear space in the water tending to a small plant in a ceramic pot, heedless of the danger. Muthak turned around with a smile as if to greet a friend, but instead he faced the shambling mound that fell upon him.
Though he feared for his life, Muthak knew instinctively that he had to protect the plant in the pot. Seeing the chrononauts approaching in the distance and recognizing them as allies, he allowed the mound to engulf him. Ivel came forth and smote the mound with a blast of magical energy, and both the mound and its captive were engulfed in flames. Though the Chrononauts mourned the loss of one of their own, Muthak’s sacrifice had saved the scion of Delorean. When they approached the pot, the awakened plant inside reached out toward Xarvis, sensing his druidic power, and granted each of the Chrononauts a vision. But whether it was a vision of the past or things to come has yet to be seen.
