존은 인생의 대부분을 상점 점원으로 살았다. 꽃다운 12살부터 42살까지 그는 네버윈터의 도시에 있는 ‘피터의 식료품점’에서 일을 했다. 그는 차곡차곡 돈을 모아 결국 자신의 가게인 ‘존의 식료품점’을 차릴 수 있었고, 그 일련의 과정속에서 결혼해서 가정을 이루었다. 44살이라는 나이에 존은 잉그마르 스톤피스트라는 마음 착한 하프오크 의적을 만났고 그를 도시 경비병으로부터 지켜줬다. 존은 경비병들에게 거짓말로 둘러대는 도중 엔도르핀과 아드레날린의 칵테일이 몸이 휘젓는 것을 느꼈다. 이윽고 그는 잉그마르에게 자신에게 도적질하는 법을 알려달라고 애원을 했다. 잉그마르는 우정과 가끔의 환대를 대가로 그렇게 하기로 했다. 슬프게도 잉그마르는 3년 후 공개 교수형에 처해졌다. 이후 8년이 아무런 일 없이 지났다. 존은 잉그마르와의 우정을 떠올리며 살아갔다. 하지만 그의 아내 베르타가 불륜을 저지르는 것과 그의 세 아들 전부 위자드 학교에서 퇴학당하는 것을 보고 존은 끊어졌다. 그는 이혼을 청구하고 그의 식료품점을 아들 셋에게 물려주고서 모험에 떠나기로 결심한다. 조심해라! 중년의 우울증에 시달리는 남자의 분노는 절대로 얕잡아 봐서는 안된다.
For most of his life, John has been a store clerk. From the ripe young age of 12 to 42, he worked as a clerk for ‘Peter’s Grocer’ up at the City of Neverwinter. He eventually saved up to make an establishment of his own called ‘John’s Grocer’ on the opposite end of the city. He also made a family along the way. At the fruitful age of 44, he met with Yngmar Stonefist, a warmhearted half-orc Robin Hood, and helped him hide from the guards. When John was lying to the guards’ face, he felt a jolt of endorphin/adrenalin mixed fever run through him. He begged Yngmar to teach him the ways of the roguery and Yngmar did so for occasional hospitality and companionship. Sadly, Yngmar was publicly hanged 3 years later. 8 years have passed without any events, and John was reminiscing about his friendship with Yngmar. And when he saw Bertha, his wife, cheat on him and 3 of his sons all fail out of a Wizard School, he had enough. He filed for divorce, gave up his shop to the hands of his sons, and left for and adventure. All beware! The fury of a man suffering mid-life crisis is never to be underestimated.
