The Silver Purge (845 YK, Olarune)

The heroes awoke in the midst of an unseasonable blizzard. Fortunately, they were inside an ancient stone hut where it was strangely warm and comfortable. It was the home of an orc gatekeeper druid named Mossmantle. He greeted the heroes in a peculiar way, as if he had met them once before. He invited them to sit by the hearth and gave each of them a warm bowl of stew. He asked them about the dreams that they had while they were asleep.

The Chrononauts had received visions of the past and the future. Mouly and Rolf dreamt of a great battle between two mighty armies with giant machines of war that terrorized the soldiers on either side.

Vaelen and Richmond saw the elven slaves of Xen’Drik during the Flight of the Elves. He saw a mysterious drow accompanied by three tieflings who wielded devastating high tech weapons against the giant masters and later gave these weapons to the elves. The mysterious strangers were none other than Richmond Valentine and Mist along with their companions.

Xarvis saw a vision of a shadowy figure that resembled Dr. Morris. But the figure was saying strange and cryptic things. “I should never have tampered with it…This is all his fault…Morris must be eliminated!” In his vision, Xarvis saw himself on his original mission to kill a young Morris. But in the vision, he had succeeded and Morris had been slain.

Teromil saw a vision of the Last War. A band of refugees were crossing the border to the elven kingdom of Valenar. But the elves of that land had no love for newcomers and slew all the refugees that approached their borders. Only two youths survived, a young elven boy and an elven girl named Mari. They were driven to Taer Shaeden where they mysteriously vanished and were seen no more.

Together, the Chronononauts witnessed the changing of history in their final vision. The drow Richmond Valentine, who was now Mist’s nemesis, appeared before the leaders of the Nations of Khorvaire during the war, offering to sell them weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were sold to Cyre, Karrnath, and Breland. But Breland kept their weapons a secret while the other two nations paraded them for all the world to see.

Then came the Day of Mourning when the nation of Cyre would be destroyed by a mysterious blast of arcane power. But now, in the new timeline, the source of the destructive power was revealed. For Karrnath had used its weapon against its neighbor, and Cyre responded in kind. The two warring states were both consumed by a dead gray mist that ended exactly at their borders and wiped out everything within. Massive chasms of purple light opened in the earth, and whole armies were slain where they stood, the unrotting corpses seeming to be frozen in time.

Cyre had fallen, but Karrnath rose again. The undead legions of Karrnath had survived the catastrophe and now swept across eastern Khorvaire, conquering all the lands before them. Meanwhile, the remaining nations of western Khorvaire – Thrane, Breland, Aundair, Zilargo, and Darguun – banded together and forged the Alliance of the Silver Flame. It was the start of a new phase of the conflict now called the Long War, which would rage for another century. It was no longer a conflict between nations but a struggle between the living and the undead.

Having told the stories of their visions, the Chrononauts now debated what to do. They decided to seek out Dr. Morris at the moment of his assassination so that they might protect him. They asked the young scion of the Delorean Tree to lend them his power. The scion created a time portal inside an ancient druidic arch and guided the chrononauts across the River of Time.

The Long War (998 YK, Olarune)

The party arrived in the year 998, a few years after the Day of Mourning. Morris was leading an expedition of dwarven treasure hunters into the Mournland when the entourage was assailed by undead terrors. In the original timeline, Morris and his party should have navigated safely through the Mournland, eventually arriving at the ruins of Metrol, the former capital of Cyre.

But the timeline had been changed. There was a flash of blue light, and a new enemy arrived. It was a futuristic warforged that resembled Xarvis. It was wielding high tech weapons and gave off an aura of freezing cold. It was accompanied by two tall shield bearing guardians. When Xarvis approached Dr. Morris, a magical amulet appeared upon the breastplate of the former, creating a mystical connection with one of the tall shield guardians. Then Xarvis was overcome by an evil spirit that overrode his command protocols. Now his operational command was not to protect Morris but to terminate the young druid.

While his companions fought desperately against the futuristic warforged, Xarvis had an impossible choice to make. He could not defy his own command protocols, but he could self terminate and save Dr. Morris. That is what he chose to do. The Chrononauts watched in horror as Xarvis self terminated, bringing down one of the shield guardians with him. The warforged from the future, seeing that its mission had failed, escaped from the field of battle in another bright flash of light.

Morris had been saved, but at a great cost. The scion of Delorean approached Morris and gave him a magical seed with which to plant the Tree of Time. Having seen the sacrifice made by the brave warforged Xarvis, Morris realized that he had an important part to play in the history of the world and resolved to do all that he could to ensure the existence of the Delorean Tree.

From here, the heroes decided to travel once again through time, but this time they would attempt to go to the distant future where they hoped an older Dr. Morris would be able to restore life to their fallen companion Xarvis.
